Societies Benefit from the Closer Relationship with Foreigners Essay
The 20th century witnessed a remarkable transformation in global connectivity due to advancements in air travel and telecommunications. This progress has led to increased contact between nations, particularly through international tourism and business. In my view, societies have greatly benefited from this closer interaction, although some challenges remain.
One of the most significant advantages is economic growth. International tourism creates employment opportunities in hospitality, transport, and local crafts, helping to boost the local economy. Similarly, global business partnerships attract foreign investment, introduce new technologies, and open up international markets for local companies. For example, countries like Thailand and the UAE have seen tremendous development due in part to their thriving tourism and business sectors.
Cultural exchange is another major benefit of increased international contact. When people from different countries interact, they share traditions, languages, and perspectives. This not only promotes mutual understanding but also encourages tolerance and global awareness. Festivals, food, and art from different cultures have now become part of daily life in many parts of the world, enriching local traditions rather than replacing them.
There are some concerns. International tourism can sometimes lead to environmental degradation or over-commercialisation of cultural sites. In business, multinational corporations may overpower local businesses. Nevertheless, these issues can be managed through sustainable practices and fair trade regulations.
While there are a few drawbacks, the benefits of closer relationships with foreigners—enabled by international tourism and business—clearly outweigh the negatives. Societies have gained economically, culturally, and socially from this global integration, making it a positive trend overall.
