There are a number of people who believe that increasing the minimum permissible age for driving motor vehicles can be an effective solution to ensure safety on roads. However, I do not agree with this statement. In this essay, I will discuss that minimum age is not the only risk factor for accidents on road but drinking is a more responsible factor.
First of all, driving is a skill and age is not a factor for learning a skill. As long as the person is physically capable of handling the vehicle he/she is as good as an adult person while driving a car or motorbike. Accidents mainly happen due to the lack of concentration while driving. For example, texting or receiving a call while driving is more hazardous while driving. A person can lose balance over the vehicle in such situations irrespective of age. There are only a handful of cases when the driver of the vehicle in case of a road accident is a minor.
Apart from that, the most number of accidents on the road are triggered by drunk driving. The minimum age for drinking is already more than the minimum age for driving in most countries. Thus, it could be deduced that more adults are causing accidents on the road as compared to the number of underage drivers and riders. In this way, there is a lack of correlation between age and road accidents and increasing the minimum age for driving cars and bikes should not help much, rather people need to be made aware of not drinking while driving.
In conclusion, increasing the minimum permissible age for driving vehicles would be less effective than preventing people from drink and drive.

It might be a good idea to increase the minimum age required for driving because of some reason. Firstly, since younger people are usually less mature and less responsible with their manners, they might not be aware of the importance of following the rules. Therefore, it is reasonable to ban them from traveling on the street to prevent them from breaking the law and causing accidents. Secondly, as older people are more experienced, they can know how to react quickly to handle dangerous situations on the road, while younger ones might not be able to. To illustrate, if the brakes of a car suddenly stop working, a young driver might panic, and accidents are more likely to occur.
However, I would argue that there are much better methods of ensuring road safety. The first one is to have stricter punishments for driving offenders. For example, people who break traffic rules should be required to pay huge fines or be banned permanently from commuting on the street. This makes commuters more likely to respect the law, and traffic accidents can be limited. Another solution is to encourage people to use public transport rather than private vehicles. This can be done by reducing the price and increasing the frequency of buses and tubes to make it more convenient for users.
In conclusion, I believe that apart from increasing the legal age for driving, there are more effective ways to make sure that travelling on the street is safe for everyone.

Proponents of the given statement say that an experienced and highly skillful driver usually needs long training and practice. Therefore, drivers who are under the age of 18, in most cases, fail to have sufficient time to perfect their driving techniques. Moreover, teenage drivers are more likely to have collisions on the road, compared to drivers in other age groups because they like to take risks to get the excitement of driving. This is because young drivers, especially those who are in adolescence, tend to overestimate their driving abilities and underestimate the dangers on the road. Nevertheless, apart from controlling the legal age strictly, I believe that other measures must be taken to prevent deaths and serious injuries.
Firstly, the government should set higher standards for testing drivers’ ability to drive and prolong the training time since better-prepared drivers and riders can reduce the number of mishaps on roads. Besides, eating, drinking or talking on the phone while driving should be strictly prohibited as these activities might distract the driver’s attention and cause some untoward consequences. Finally, the stricter age limitation for drivers is especially suitable for those senior drivers who have failing eyesight or problems with night vision. Although senior drivers might be adept at driving a car, their energy, eyesight and reaction time sometimes cannot make them cope with some unexpected traffic conditions.

It is commonly believed that the ideal way to ensure road safety is to raise the minimum age for getting a driving license. I believe that raising the legal age of driving would lead to more problems and other methods like banning the use of mobile phones and stricter punishments for traffic violators would turn out to be more effective.
I believe raising the minimum driving age would rather increase accidents. Today, most people are busy, and they don’t have time to drive their children. Thus, teenagers and youngsters knowing driving is no more an option but a necessity. If driving is not allowed, it doesn’t deter youngsters from driving but rather makes them drive illegally. For example, many teenagers are caught driving without a license in India as the legal driving age is on the higher side. Driving illegally means youngsters driving without knowing about traffic rules and driving fast to avoid police which leads to more accidents.
A more effective solution to reduce traffic accidents would be to ban mobile phone use while driving. Nowadays, the major reason for accidents is distracted driving, which means reading messages or taking calls while driving. Reckless and rash driving, which is associated with young age and lack of maturity, are certainly not the main reason for accidents. Thus, banning the use of mobile phones and inculcating a habit of undivided attention among people while driving would prove more effective.
Another solution that I think can prove more beneficial would be to have stringent fines and punishments for traffic violations and especially for repeat offenses. In India particularly, many traffic accidents are caused by breaking the traffic rules, like jumping red lights or driving on the wrong side of the road to save time. Thus, a healthy culture of people following rules and regulations needs to be developed and this can be done by having harsher punishments like high fines, suspension of driving license and so on.
In conclusion, I think there are better alternatives to raising the legal age for driving as this could lead to more problems.

However, I would like to argue that there are other better approaches to reduce road accidents. We can substantially reduce traffic accidents by the means of stiff punishment for traffic offenders. This would be effective in two ways. First of all, once a strict law is imposed and, it prevents people’s attempt to make an offense a second time. Secondly, when a person is punished severely is considered as a mirror at which other people may look and they try to avoid the same incidents.
Based on the above discussion, it is easily said that there are some effective measures along with the age bar. The other ways should be considered in order to ensure road safety.

In conclusion, while raising the driving age certainly affects the number of car crashes, I do not believe that it outweighs all other measures.
