Describe an Old Person You Know and Respect – Grandfather
Well, frankly speaking, I am born and brought up in a country where showing respect to elders is expected in our culture. Besides, I believe that senior citizens are the backbone of our society because of their ample amount of knowledge and wide experiences of their life, which could be helpful in many ways. I am fortunate enough that I have come across a myriad of amazing old people, and of course, I respect them all.
However, I would like to take this opportunity to talk about my grandfather, whom I don’t only admire the most, but also, he is very close to my heart. Like any other grandchildren, I am extremely attached to him due to his unconditional love. There is nothing so extraordinary to exaggerate about him, but one thing that makes him special is his humble and down-to-earth nature. By profession, my grandpa is a retired doctor as he is in his 70s and is very simple and a kind man. Frankly speaking, I have seen him since my childhood working really hard to cure his patients.
Moreover, he never discriminated between affluent and deprived people and always consider all his patients equally. I remember when he was working in his clinic, sometimes few patients did not have any money to pay the fees, but he still consulted them that too free of cost. I vividly remember people used to say that there is some magic in my grandpa’s hand, and they consider him as God as he healed numerous sick patients.
Honestly speaking, I always wonder how he manages to be so generous and grounded, being at such a prestigious position. Besides, he is never proud of his achievements and wealth. He believes in simple living and high thinking that makes me a die-hard fan of him.
I admire him for so many reasons, but mostly because of his loving and caring nature for everyone. It wouldn’t be wrong if I say that he is my biggest inspiration, and I love him to the moon and back.
He took his retirement because of his old age, but he is still as fit as a fiddle, and I hope Almighty bless him with a healthy and long life.

IELTS Speaking Part 3 :
Describe an Old Person You Know and Respect – Follow up Questions
Here are some examples of follow-up questions that you may get during your speaking part 3 by the examiner related to cue card “Describe an Old Person You Know and Respect”.
What qualities does a person need to have to take care of old people?
People need to have a caring and compassionate nature to take care of the elderly. Also, people need to have a lot of patience, calm and composed nature to assist the old people because sometimes old people may have mood swings and due to old age dementia they become forgetful and ask for the same thing a number of times.
Do you think old people should be taken care of at home?
Yes, old people should be taken care of at home by the other family members. They should be assisted in doing activities which they are unable to do alone. If the situation is critical and beyond the capability of family members to handle, then a nurse or caretaker can be hired. The sick elders may also be taken to hospital in some critical illness.
How can people in the neighbourhood help the elderly during an epidemic?
People in the neighbourhood can help the elderly in many ways. They can fetch items of groceries, medicines, fruits and vegetables for the elderly during a pandemic as it is risky for the old aged to go out due to weaker immunity. A good neighbourhood can be very helpful in taking care of the elderly during an outbreak.
Do you see this kind of help occurring in your neighbourhood?
Unfortunately no. People in my neighbourhood are not very friendly, concerned or compassionate. They do not pay heed to what is happening in the area. It’s probably because most people nowadays have become materialistic and they are least bothered about the elderly living next door.
What average age is normal for retirement in your opinion?
I think the normal retirement age should be 65 years because the average life cycle in my country is over 70 years and the people who got retired by their 60s may be able to contribute for five years more if the age is increased. When they got retired, they have nothing much to do instead of remembering the past. But their hard-earned expertise and experience might be used for the further development of society.
What are the good things about being retired?
When someone is retired, there are few good things. Firstly they have enough time to think about any issue to bring a positive change as most of the employed people are routine-bound and rarely have time to ponder. Secondly, they are the pool of experience and they could use them to meet their individual needs. Thirdly, the retired people have plenty of time and thus they could use them in different productive activities.
How does the government in your country treat the retired people?
The government of my state provides retired people with different incentives. They have health and medical allowance and special facilities in hospitals, they are awarded different other incentives like senior citizens allowance, priority and assistance in every task; for instance, they get assistance even if they are in a queue of tickets for a bus ride and more other similar issues.
Can young specialists substitute the old ones who are in retirement in the workplace?
I do not think that the young specialist can substitute the skilled retired workforce. The young are still in a learning process and lack the maturity and expertise to execute a task smoothly. On the other side, the retired people have performed those tasks probably a hundred thousand times and thus they have achieved excellence at their respective workplaces. So, it needs more time for the young specialists to substitute the retired hands and in fact, it is not possible for the young to beat the old in terms of executing respective tasks.
What do you think is it necessary to give retirement to people? Why/ Why not?
In my individual opinion, it appears that senior people need retirement after a certain age. As a human being, we have many limitations and thus we need to take a rest. It is applicable for retired people too. They may make accidental mistakes in their workplace if they are not retired after a specific period. With the advancement of age, people start losing their working ability and when they reach the limit, there are mistakes and accidents. So they need to go for retirement but that should be done after a certain age.
What are the pros and cons of being retired?
The most important benefit of retirement is that you will have plenty of time and no tension to pass the remaining life, but people who are habituated to work cannot sit idle. There are some people who do not work for earning their living only rather they need to work to remain alive. They need to work for their mental stability and when they get retired, they suffer from mental stress.
