Many people believe economic development is the only solution to end hunger and poverty, while others think that economic growth should be stopped due to the harmful effects it has on the environment. In this essay, I will examine both arguments and then give my personal opinion.
It is true that economic growth has taken a heavy toll on the environment. Firstly, the ever increasing demand for industrial development has led to the construction of more factories and manufacturing facilities, which has significantly raised the volume of atmospheric greenhouse gases, which are considered to be the main culprit behind global warming. Furthermore, human activities, such as clearing forests for farming, are directly responsible for the loss of natural habitats for many wild plants and animals, pushing these species to the verge of extinction. This, together with the unsustainable exploitation of natural resources, poses serious threats to the survival of mankind, especially with today’s rapidly increasing population. ielts x p r e s s
However, trying to stop the economy from developing, due to the drawbacks, is not a rational approach, for economic growth is still the most effective measure to tackle poverty and hunger. A healthy economy will create more employment opportunities for those who come from underprivileged backgrounds, and thus ensure stable income for these people. Therefore, they will be able to earn enough money to cover basic living expenses. Besides this, economic growth also has a crucial role to play in the fight against hunger. With a more generous budget to invest in agricultural development, for example, governments can invest in modern machinery to automate the labour-intensive processes of growing and harvesting crops. Such a boost in productivity will increase food production and eventually put an end to hunger.
In conclusion, it is understandable why many people believe that economic growth should be stopped to protect our environment, however, I think the government should not rely on such a desperate measure because the benefits brought about by economic growth, not only in the fight against poverty and hunger, are far more significant than the drawbacks.

People are divided on the role of economic development. Some opine that it is essential in addressing poverty whereas others say that it should be stopped as it is causing irreversible damage to the environment. This essay intends to analyse both perspectives. I personally believe that both arguments have weightage as poverty has to be mitigated, but saving the environment is also equally important. So, we have to look into methods of sustainable economic development. Stopping economic development is not the way out.
It is irrefutable that by the development of economy people can improve their quality of life. For example, in developed countries even the poorest of the poor has the basic amenities of life such as food, clothing and shelter. All the citizens enjoy high level of social welfare and they enjoy free medical care and free education. Even in countries like India and China, international Companies have created many jobs and as a result, economic development has accelerated even further.
However, it is also true that in our quest for development and becoming richer, we have harmed some of our environment. Most of the things we use require some kind of energy to manufacture, operate and maintain. Disposing-off these things is very difficult too. Most of the energy that we use is polluting the environment. Renewable energy forms a very small part of what is used on a significant scale. Looking at both arguments, it is clear that with economic development, the damage to the environment is inevitable. But, we cannot put a halt on economic progress because the status of the underprivileged has to be improved. Therefore, we have to look into methods by which we can achieve progress without damaging the environment. For instance, we know that there are renewable sources of energy which are less polluting. So, the answer lies in the green technologies, which increasingly use renewable resources of energy. We should also remember the three “Rs” – reduce, reuse and recycle. ln this way we can achieve an ecologically sustainable development. ln order for progress to cause minimum damage to environment, sustainability has to be worked at.
Summing up, there is no doubt that with economic development, poverty is lessened. At the same time, it is also definite that development is leading to pollution. But, instead of stopping development we can work upon environmentally friendly development.

Poverty and hunger is the most pressing issue in many developing countries. In many circles, it is argued that economic growth can quell the poverty and hunger. Conversely, others want to rein economic growth back as it brings forth environmental damage. Although it is a good point against the economic growth, I personally believe that economic growth plays a paramount role in alleviating poverty and hunger and economy can be thrived without compromising the environment.
Economic growth is the key instrument for eradicating poverty and ameliorating the quality of life in poorer countries. The growth can create a virtuous circle of opportunity and prosperity. A booming economy and job opportunities inspires parents to invest in their children education by sending them to school. This may cause the emergence of a sturdy and growing group of entrepreneurs. And it goes without saying that when people are able to generate their income, then the poverty and hunger will be eclipsed by the prosperity. On the other hand, economic growth may impact on environment substantially. Example include the over exploitation of fish stocks, the destruction of forest through deforestation, loss of natural habitat and bio-diversity from the construction of new roads and highways, high-rise buildings, hotels, shopping malls, and industrial zones. However, growth means more production and more consumption, which in turn contribute to the huge expansion of waste and pollution. On the top of that, the huge production uses a substantial amounts of energy, burning more fossil fuels. As a result of burning fossil fuels, the climate is got warm eventually.
In my opinion, historically nothing has work better than economic growth in qualifying societies to ameliorate the living standards of their members, including those who at the very bottom. However, the growth also harms the environment severely. To that end, economic growth should be decoupled from the environmental damage by devising eco-friendly activities and innovating green technology.

Those who see economic growth alone as the sole cure for the tragedy of world hunger and poverty propose one major argument. Only the growth of the economies of the developing countries will provide the poor with the wealth to afford the basic necessities of life. The profits made by corporations who are responsible for this economic growth will trickle down in the form of financial benefits to be enjoyed by the starving and needy. This view has justified the age of imperialism and the destruction of the livelihood of millions in the name of progress.
On the other hand, there are countless examples to support the opposing view that economic growth results in environmental destruction. On the one hand, it can be argued that economic growth increases global warming. A bigger economy means more economic activities, such as manufacturing cars and shipping goods. However, I believe that we can boost economy while minimizing environmental damages.
To commence with, the governments in many developing countries put emphasize on some sectors, for example tourism, to eradicate poverty and hunger. Not only is tourism is seen as a key instrument for regional development, but also it embarks upon new economic activities. To do so, the government initiates developmental programme constructing several general infrastructures such as, roads and highways, airports, and so on. In addition, both the government and the private corporations make sure some essential tourism facilities like hotels, resorts, restaurants, shopping mall, golf course, marinas, and so forth. As a result, this development has tremendous positive economic impact on employment, on GDP, and on the balance of payments. There are a number of drawbacks of pursuing extension, such as deforestation, oil mining and many more. To gain finance, industrialization is necessary. Therefore, environmental concerns can be solved as we consistently pursue economic growth. Moreover, if we suddenly stop all economic activities, mass problems, bigger than environment will emerge for instance, sudden increase of unemployment and primitive age.
In conclusion, green issues are truly enormous and the world has to strive as much as it can. However, in order to clear up the mess what humans did, finance is essential and this can be gained by funding the industries.
