Describe an Experience When You Taught an Older Person something New IELTS Speaking Cue Card Topic

This topic reminds me of an experience when I taught my grandma how to use her newly-bought smartphone.

More or less 3 months ago, after my nerve-racking exam season, I was in desperate need of a short break. That’s why I decided to go back to my hometown to visit my granny who is around 80 years old now because she’s also my best friend. The day I arrived at her house, I saw her struggling with her brand new Iphone.

She’s been long known for her absent-mindedness, so I doubt that she could remember how to use such a sophisticated gadget. You know, the elderly didn’t have any exposure to cutting-edge technology when they were young like us, so this was much of a challenge for her. Therefore, I patiently taught my granny how to use her phone.

I told her to jot down every single thing I taught her, such as how to swipe the screen to find her favorite applications, or how to zoom an image with two fingers. She wasn’t a very quick learner, though. It’s quite obvious, as I believe the aging process is doing its job, so I keep repeating everything to her and try not to lose my temper.

Well I am also proud to say that I am a self-possessed individual, so after 2 months, she nailed it. I mean, she is now able to make a video call by herself and create her own Instagram account without anybody’s assistance. I guess this can be seen as a success for both of us.

Describe an experience when you taught an older person

I think teaching an old person anything new requires a lot of patience. However, it can be a quite interesting and fulfilling experience. Here, I would like to talk about one such situation when I taught my mother how to use WhatsApp and its chat and video calling features. My mother is in her late 60s and recently she got a new smartphone. She was used to a basic phone and comfortable with only the calling and texting features.

When she got this new phone, I installed several apps for her, like for games, music, etc. She was very keen on learning how to use WhatsApp as many of her friends were already using it and had told her about it. I installed it on her phone and first told her about the various options. Then I told her about the chat feature and taught her how to create and send a new message. She was able to do that well, as she was used to texting. Describe an experience when you taught an older person something new.

However, forwarding an existing message took her almost a week to learn and understand. It was frustrating to tell her the same thing every day, but I didn’t lose my patience and made sure that she got the hang of it. After that, I taught her about video calling. She was really happy when she was able to call my elder sister, who lives in another city and video chat with her. She is now a part of many WhatsApp groups. She loves reading the jokes and watching all the videos she receives on these groups and also can easily forward them to other groups.

I did start losing my cool at one point when teaching her, but when I think about it today, it only makes me smile. I am glad that I was able to teach her something new and she really appreciates that I did. She still tells me sometimes that this is something that she could never have learnt without my help. I think we can all teach such things to our parents and grandparents and make sure that they too can use the technology and gadgets for their benefit and entertainment. This is the least we can do for them.

Well, teaching skill requires a lot of patience as well as a plethora of information. These days, older persons are learning how to operate Technology from their children. Also, I have taught my grandmother to use an android phone. It was a good experience for me. I describe that time briefly.

About 1 year ago, I gifted an Android phone to my grandmother on her 50th Birthday. Actually, I wanted that my grandmother should get knowledge about the mobile phone in order to use it to solve problems. When I give it to my grand mum, she felt glad. But unfortunately, he didn’t know how to operate it. I promised her to teach her to use an Android phone.experience when you taught

Fortunately, by the grace of God, my grandmother news about local languages such as Punjabi and Hindi. First of all, I changed the language settings for mobile phones and set up local language Punjabi.

After this, I taught her how can she make calls or voice calls as well as I taught her to receive calls. She was so excited to learn it step by step. But this process took lots of patience. She learnt it in a day.

Next day, I taught her to use YouTube. Actually she is crazy to watch video clips. Before that time, I often gave her my mobile phone to watch videos on YouTube.

But now she was happy to watch it on her own smartphone. To be honest, my grandmother is unable to search for anything on YouTube by typing text on its search tab. Then I advised her to search with the help of speakerphone on the right side of the search tab on YouTube. She happily did it and learned it easily.

In the present scenario, she is happy with her mobile phone. Also, she can use an application named WhatsApp. With the help of WhatsApp, she sends voice messages to her near and dear ones.

Overall, this was the experience of mine when I taught my grandmother to operate an Android phone. I believe that mobile has become an unbreakable part of my grandmother’s life.
